Established in 1997 by Louise and Michael Quinn, Mount Macedon Peonies is now operated by their daughter Kathryn with Mark McKenzie. Located on a private 100-acre farm in the Kerrie Valley at the foot of Mount Macedon, near Hanging Rock in Victoria. We are within an hour’s drive of Melbourne and only 30 minutes from the Melbourne International Airport. The Macedon Ranges Shire is renowned for its semi-rural lifestyle, boasting an array of grand gardens, many of which are open to the public in spring through to autumn. Mount Macedon is the highest peak (1,013 metres) in the Ranges. The area is a little cooler than Melbourne, and in winter parts of it are subject to occasional snowfalls.
In the nineteenth century Melbourne’s wealthiest residents escaped the summer heat and went to Mount Macedon. There they built impressive mansions and created some of Victoria’s finest gardens, some of which are now classified by the National Trust. “The great gardens of Mount Macedon showed off the incredible wealth of their owners. There was enormous competition between them to have the biggest and the best gardens and the rarest plants.” (Stephen Ryan, horticulturist, author and owner of Dicksonia Rare Plants.) Wandering through these mature but ever changing gardens, a mixture of rare and exotic trees and plants can be seen set against a backdrop of the rich Australian bushland.
We believe that the property has the ideal climate, rainfall and high quality soil to grow peonies. Mount Macedon was once referred to as: “Victoria’s Garden of Eden where the works of man and nature were in complete harmony. There the flowers seemed bigger in size, deeper in colour and sweeter in perfume”. Our peony farm has certainly lived up to this!
We now have more than 40,000 plants showcasing 13 varieties carefully selected to comprise the most popular peonies. See the Varieties page for descriptions and photos.
Peony season ties in perfectly with the end of year festive period from mid-November to late December.
Currently operated as a wholesale business, Mount Macedon Peonies will be conducting open days and private events from 2020. We are currently taking cut flower orders for wedding and event flowers for the 2019 season. Please get in touch for more details.
